Major increase in file and attachment sizes

Effective immediately, all users can send and receive larger attachments.

Raising the bar from our previous 7MB largest attachment size, the sizes are now:

  • 10MB – Guest and Member
  • 30MB – Full
  • 50MB – Enhanced

These apply to the sum of the sizes of all attachments on any email, and also to the maximum size of any upload or download from filestorage.

This information is also available in the pricing table.

Please post any comments or bug reports in this forum thread.

edit: spell MB correctly with a capital B. For those purists amongst us the values are actually in MiB – (N * 1024 * 1024 bytes)

Improved ‘From:’ address when replying

We’ve improved the ‘Reply’ behaviour so that it will use the X-Delivered-to address in preference to falling back to the default personality. Hopefully the only difference that you notice is that you have to correct the From address less often!

(Previously if there was no address in the To or Cc which matched a personality, then the default personality would be used when replying. This could be annoying when replying to a message of which you were a Bcc recipient, or a message that was addressed to a throwaway address in your own domain.)

This also means that you may not need to use as many personalities, but that depends on how you use them.

“WP-Messaging Engine Pty Ltd, Bundoora” made more prominent

Our setup with our credit card merchant means that our name on users credit card statements appears as “WP-Messaging Engine Pty Ltd, Bundoora”. We’ve now made this very clear on the payments screen so hopefully no one will miss this.

At the same time we’ve made it harder to accidentally click the payment button twice by disabling it after the initial click.

Poll window in Firefox 1.0.1 displays message counts instead of URL again

Firefox 1.0.1 introduced a “security” fix where popup windows without a “location” bar would display the windows URL as the first thing in the title of the window. This was annoying since normally we display “unread-message-count/total-message-count/last-update-time” in the title instead, which appears nicely in the taskbar in Windows.

We’ve now got a work around in place for Firefox 1.0.1 users who use the Poll window so that the message count is again displayed as the text in the taskbar.

New MX server naming for hosted domains

rewritten to be clearer about who is affected and match the forum thread

Who this affects:

This only affects users who host email for their own domain with FastMail or other ME brands, but manage their own DNS.

What has changed:

The preferred naming of our MX servers. The old names and have been merged into the single load balanced server, and has been renamed to match.

What do I need to do:

If you manage your own DNS (to allow your website to be hosted elsewhere) but have your email hosted with us, then you need to change the MX servers for your domain to the following:

  •; preference=10
  •; preference=20

Will there be any outages:

No. Since both the old and new names point at the same servers, the changeover will not be transparent. You can make these changes without fear of affecting your email (though note: make sure you spell the server names correctly!). We won’t be removing the old names any time soon, so things will keep working either way.

If you haven’t updated your domain in the next few weeks you’ll receive an email with these same details suggesting that you change your settings – then a bit later the automatic domain checker will be changed to warn about the incorrect settings, and finally we’ll remove the old names once we’ve confirmed that everyone had changed over.

If you have any questions, please post them in this forum thread.

New forwarding filter rule ‘Always’

There was a problem with our suggested method of forwarding all emails using filters – if the message had a blank Subject header then it would not be
forwarded. Rather than using a more complex workaround we have implemented an additional filter, ‘Always’. It’s identical to ‘Advanced’ with a matching text of ‘true’.

NOTE: This filter doesn’t look at the values of either the matching text or the ‘Not’ field (NOT Always is never, which is pointless!).

We recommend that if you’re currently using ‘*’ in the matching text field you switch the look in field to ‘Always’ to guarantee every message is forwarded.

URLs no longer wrapped by ‘Format’

Thanks to the excellent Damian Conway who has given us a Beta update to the Text::Reform module which was found to have a bug with processing very long lines containing hyphens (-) near the end, we can now stop URLs being wrapped by our Format command.

This should make pasting long URLs into emails a little easier, though tools like or are still good for making easy to copy and paste URLs.
